Education is a fundamental right.
At the moment, this is not the case in Ontario, other parts of Canada, and in many parts of the world.
Some places – even within Canada – have extremely low financial conditions attached to enrollment – as we once did, even in Ontario – yet the burden of paying for school falls increasingly on the individual student.
Consequently, many of us are forced to work. Two, and sometimes three, jobs, and only to pay for an education that will let us contribute in a bigger way to society. Official and non-official financial aid are not enough, and are in fact being scaled back by the government. We can’t all rely on the “Bank of Parents” for money.
Cue Working Students United.
We exist in order to promote a greater understanding of the issues facing students, both close to home and far abroad. We believe that “education as a privilege” is a pitiful excuse that exists to skirt around the real reasons why we are faced with a post-secondary funding crisis.
We exist to unite. There’s strength in numbers, and together we can achieve our goals.
